Caged Bird by Maya Angelou

A free bird leaps
on the back of the wind
and floats downstream
till the current ends
and dips his wing
in the orange sun rays
and dares to claim the sky.

But a bird that stalks
down his narrow cage
can seldom see through
his bars of rage
his wings are clipped and
his feet are tied
so he opens his throat to sing.

The caged bird sings
with a fearful trill
of things unknown
but longed for still
and his tune is heard
on the distant hill
for the caged bird
sings of freedom.

The free bird thinks of another breeze
and the trade winds soft through the sighing trees
and the fat worms waiting on a dawn bright lawn
and he names the sky his own.

But a caged bird stands on the grave of dreams
his shadow shouts on a nightmare scream
his wings are clipped and his feet are tied
so he opens his throat to sing.

The caged bird sings
with a fearful trill
of things unknown
but longed for still
and his tune is heard
on the distant hill
for the caged bird
sings of freedom.

Immortality: A Traveler’s Guide is comprised of 180 selections of Hazrat Inayat Khan’s teachings from The Soul Whence and Whither, accompanied by Pir Zia’s commentary and contemplative practices related to each theme. This book stands on its own, but can also be used as a stepping stone to further study of Inayat Khan’s teachings on the soul.

⭐ Ya Shakur! It’s Giving Tuesday…⭐

29 November 2022

Dear friends on this path,

Our caravan is once again approaching the culmination of another cycle around the sun. Some of you may be traveling to spend time with family, chosen or biological, in preparation for holidays and vacations. It is in this atmosphere that we observe Giving Tuesday, a day dedicated to giving back to those institutions that have nourished our lives and enriched the world. This time of year is one of coming together, of gratitude and reflection. A time to look back on what has been and look forward to what is to come in the New Year.

Over the past couple of years, much has emerged, and continues to emerge, within the Inayatiyya. When confronted with the pandemic, we did not contract apart. Instead, we reached outward, amplifying the voice of our community through new modes of connectivity. Healing circles met virtually around the globe. We have begun to examine our network of Kinship, seeking out the places where mending is needed, and commencing that work. Universal Worship, Music, and the other Activities have expanded into the plane of the virtual. We continue to grow.

I have been a murid along this path for well over a decade now, and I feel gratitude for the opportunities and experiences that I have had along the way. I have had the privilege of attending retreats where I sat in the presence of our Pir Zia and other honored teachers of our lineage. I have participated in camps, celebrations, and performances that have steeped my soul in a beautiful fragrance that will linger with me forever. When I think back on these gatherings, I consider the immensity of time and devotion required for them to take place and the countless hours of staff, faculty, and volunteer effort that were necessary for each one.

I have been transformed by the influence of Murshid’s teachings and the Inayatiyya in my life. I have received countless blessings through my fellowship in the Inayatiyya. In gratitude and in hope, I give back to our community each year. I give back, so that the Message may continue to find those who hear its call, and that those individuals may have the same opportunity for community and belonging that I have been given.

Giving back to the Inayatiyya supports the continuation of our community into the future. This Giving Tuesday, I ask that each of you reflect upon your own journey within the Inayatiyya and the impact it has made for you. Consider all that was needed to make those experiences a reality. Today, I ask that you give your monetary pledge of support, that those experiences may continue to illuminate the hearts of others, and that we may continue to spread the message of love, harmony, and beauty far and wide.

With gratitude,

Treasurer, Inayatiyya Board North America

The Zephyr, November 2022

16 November 2022

Dear Companions on the Path,

November greetings! I hope this note finds you and your loved ones well.

Two weeks ago I visited Berkeley, California. I saw my mother Taj and brother Mirza, and spent a meaningful weekend with companions on the path from many parts of the Western U.S., as well as from Mexico and Canada. It was a chance to reconnect with old friends and to meet new ones. I stayed at the Incarnation Monastery, a place of serene quietude where stellar jays peered in from the trees. Our gathering took place at the charming Hillside Club. The arrangements were made by our impeccable hosts Risala and Rashid, who worked assiduously for months to make this first post-Covid North American gathering possible. Our theme was The Soul’s Journey, the subject of my forthcoming commentary on Murshid’s eschatological teachings, Immortality: A Traveler’s Guide (Suluk Press, March 2023). It’s a theme to which I plan to return in two weeks’ time in Paris. Friends in Europe, I hope to see you soon in the City of Lights.

Among the honored elders present with us in Berkeley was the esteemed Curandera Espiritu Grandmother Flordemayo, a beloved Godmother of our community. We were also graced by an entrancing visit from the founders of the Church of St. John Coltrane, Archbishop Franzo Wayne King and Mother Marina King, accompanied by Mother Marina’s sister and the founders’ daughter Rev. Wanika Stephens. This past weekend, Inayatiyya Music hosted a scintillating online conversation with these new friends and John Coltrane’s biographer Dr. Cuthbert Simpkins.

Many of us are currently participating in the Kinship 21-Day Challenge organized by Kinship North America and Oceania. Each day we explore salient writings and recordings on issues of equity and justice. For me, an inspiring personal example of centering the stories of marginalized people is work that my daughter Rasulan is doing in New York City. She works for an organization focused on bail and prosecutorial reform. It’s harrowing to hear how often people – usually people of color – end up in jail for months or years, in deplorable conditions, without access to counsel and with only the distant prospect of a hearing. The right to be regarded as innocent until proven guilty all too frequently turns out to be the exclusive prerogative of just one segment of the population. By contrast, when the justice system treats people fairly, the result is not more crime but in fact lower levels of recidivism. I am moved by the work that Rasulan and others are doing to bring greater fairness to the system.

Another series of messages you may be following – I certainly am – are the daily messages from our dear colleague Gulrukh reflecting on the COP27 Climate Change Conference in Egypt. Gulrukh is cogently utilizing the paradigm of the Sophic Whorl to illuminate the ways in which we can all engage in the effort to honestly reckon with the consequences of decades of one-sided industrial development and seek a new understanding between ourselves and the Earth. If you haven’t yet seen Gulrukh’s valuable messages, you will find them here.

I hear from our Suluk Administrator Isa Sophia that the upcoming Suluk Global Online class, beginning in March, is steadily filling up. I have been in touch with some of those who have been applying, and I am greatly looking forward to working with the new cadre. For me, studying Murshid’s essential teachings and practices never feels repetitive; there is always much more to discover. And every discovery is a glint in the eye of the Beloved.

Yours ever,
Pir Zia

The Journey of the Soul w/ Pir Zia Inayat Khan
Paris, France, December 3rd – 4th, 2022

Remember! That is the injunction of the prophets. Remember where you came from and you will know where you are going. Hazrat Inayat Khan’s The Soul, Whence and Whither offers a panoramic unveiling of the soul’s journey. Guided in this contemplative retreat by Hazrat’s grandson and lineage-bearer, we will recall our descent through the spiritual and imaginative worlds we knew before our birth. Then, looking toward the horizon, we will anticipate the interdimensional itinerary that still lies ahead. Situating ourselves, in this way, within a vaster map, we will be brought to a clearer understanding of what is needed here and now.

Traveling Light: A Sufi Retreat
w/Amida Cary, Yaqin Aubert & Jacob Miraj Ellenberg
December 9th – 11th, 2022

In this retreat we will explore the Sufi perspective of light, the light within, and being a “being of light.” Clouds of limitation, such as confusion, uncertainty, and distress, obscure the natural light within. Heaviness of heart weighs us down. But when heaviness and limitation are removed, joy comes, and we feel light. How might “being light” unburden our bodies, minds, hearts and souls, and more so, inspire us, with the support of clear minds and loving hearts, to build a more beautiful world of beautiful people?

As we journey through the stages of retreat we will draw from our rich heritage of light practices to reconnoiter how light purifies, opens, reveals, inspires and creates. How does “being light” affect our sense of identity? Inform our relationships? Color our individual and collective understanding of and participation in the world? Imagine what it would be like to travel lightly through life!

Fall Appeal 2022

November 6, 2022

Hello dear friends,

We write to you today as the leaves lose their brilliant colors in much of the Northern Hemisphere, knowing that in this shedding is the promise of renewal. It’s time to reflect on the past year in gratitude for what has given us light and look forward to finding ways to sustain our luminous community. We extend this gratitude to you with a humble request for your support.

The Inayatiyya has stayed constant in our mission despite the many challenges of recent years. From March 2020 through 2021, we created new ways to respond to the call from our ashiqs and murids, both experienced and new, by offering an abundance of teachings and gatherings via Zoom. The necessity to keep our community connected during this time significantly stretched our resources.

As we started 2022, it seemed that isolation was ending so we optimistically organized several in-person events. However, plans had to change as people’s desire to gather was offset by hesitancy and by the ease and effectiveness of online events.

An unexpected priority for much of the year was the need to change our legal and financial relationship to the Abode. While we are very close to having a positive resolution, this required financial resources we had hoped would go towards other initiatives and projects.

Despite these challenges, we have been able to support Pir Zia’s work, expand access to programs from the Seven Activities (Inner School, Kinship, Healing, Universal Worship, Ziraat, Knighthood of Purity, and Music), and lift up teachers and guides who work with ashiqs and murids around the globe.

There is still much to do if we are to fully realize our mission. An Inayatiyya Adaptive Plan for North America was created last year to guide our priorities through 2025.

In 2023, we intend to focus on:

  • Ensuring the work of our lineage is preserved and made available to an ever-growing community of those drawn to Sufism and the teachings of Hazrat Inayat Khan
  • Activating the Pir Vilayat Legacy Project, collecting, digitizing, and disseminating Pir Vilayat’s recordings from his decades as Pir of our lineage
  • Offering teachings and programs from Pir Zia and a great variety of other leaders within our Seven Activities
  • Integrating the work of the Seven Activities with the Astana as an administrative hub
  • Investing in our leadership with training for teachers and spiritual guides
  • Collaborating with Inayatiyya Center Leaders to refine our network as we maintain the new reality of online, in-person and hybrid gatherings

As we face ongoing challenges, our resources continue to be stretched. New uncertainties in the world combined with increased interest in our work will require even more flexibility and resilience. If you have felt supported by the Inayatiyya and if our offerings have provided you with light, we pray that you will unite with us in your pledge of support to spread the Message far and wide.

The Inayatiyya Board of North America will continue to serve with a knowing that this Movement is vital to the times in which we all live.

In service,

The Zephyr, October 2022

19 October 2022

Dear Companions on the Path,

Greetings to you on this fine October day.

Here in Richmond (and online), last weekend the Universal Worship held its much-anticipated Convocation (photos here). It was an opportunity for cherags and other members of the Church of All and of All Churches to come together to pray, converse, and more deeply explore the meaning that the unity of religious ideals holds in our time.

To speak of our interfaith initiative as the “Church of All,” as it has been known since its founding a century ago, admittedly sounds audacious. How can we claim to represent all of the doctrines expounded by all of the believers of all of the religions of the world? Of course, we cannot. Our aim, however, is something different.

“Down whichsoever path love’s dromedaries speed / that is my religion, I profess that blessed creed,” wrote Shaykh al-Akbar Ibn al-‘Arabi.

Throughout history the voice of revelation has always communicated its message in a mode suited to the minds of its recipients, even when confronting them with inconvenient truths. Can there be any doubt that the Spirit of Guidance speaks at least as many languages as people do? Yet while there are many articulations of the sacred, the sacred itself is really always the same one thing. It’s the call of the One to the many, reminding us of what is infinitely vaster than our cantankerous, hidebound little selves. Whenever the summons of the sacred reaches a ready psyche it ignites a fervor for presence, a love of love, and an eagerness to travel the path of devotion and service to the All.

At the Convocation we celebrated the many contributions of Amina Hall, who has served with great dedication for the last six years as the Moin-ul-Maham (Vice President) of the Universal Worship for the Americas and Oceania. Amina is now passing the torch to Mumtaz Kammerer, who has worked closely with her for some time, and who has for decades led a weekly Universal Worship service in Baltimore. Another transition is occurring simultaneously, and equally bears marking. Since even before Amina’s tenure, Tara Muir has been steadfastly overseeing the administrative work of the Universal Worship in the Americas and Oceania. She is now entrusting this work to Cathy Fattah Layland. Please join me in expressing deep appreciation to Amina and Tara and a warm welcome to Mumtaz and Cathy Fattah.

Friends on the West Coast of the U.S., I hope to see you in Berkeley early next month. Friends on the European continent, I hope to see you in Paris in December. As we emerge from the isolation of the last two years, I look forward to the many ways in which, God willing, we will be able to be together in the year, and years, ahead.

Yours ever,
Pir Zia

The Zephyr, September 2022

21 September 2022

Dear Companions on the Path,

Equinoctial greetings! May these lines find you well.

Next month Shambhala releases its new edition of Murshid’s The Mysticism of Sound and Music. Among the many sentences that leap off the page of that timeless book is this one: “Some day music will be the means of expressing universal religion.”

What did Murshid mean by this?

Music plays an important role in the rituals of nearly all of the world’s great spiritual traditions. Within the civilization of Islam, music has had both its detractors and its champions. Among the latter was al-Ghazali, who famously declared that banning music made as little sense as censoring nightingales. The Sufis of Chisht went further, asserting that, “There are discoveries in musical audition not to be found in a hundred years of canonical worship.”

Music is the seventh Activity of the Inayatiyya, and I am always struck by the way in which music elevates the tenor of our gatherings. This summer in Turkey we listened with sheer elation as murids who have formed a musical ensemble offered songs in Turkish, Arabic, and Hindi. They even played melodies that Ravan had composed, and that after only hearing them once or twice! In Switzerland we were swept away by the ney and bansuri of Sinan Arat, the singing of Ruhiya (whose beautiful evocation of the spirit of the Philippines, Ginhawa, has just been released), the Indic Sophic zikr of Fereshta Bechtloff, and Ravan’s ilahis on tar and rawap.

John Coltrane is said to have been inspired by Murshid’s The Mysticism of Sound and Music. At the Saint John Coltrane African Orthodox Church in San Francisco, the weekly Sunday service consists of listening to the artist’s saxophonic exploration of ‘ishq, A Love Supreme. I plan to attend the Coltrane Church in November when visiting the Bay Area for The Journey of the Soul. Friends on the U.S. West Coast, I look forward to seeing you then. The following week, God willing, I will join with John Coltrane’s biographer and the founders of the Coltrane Church in an online dialogue for Coltrane & the Mysticism of Sound.

When Murshid spoke of music expressing universal religion, did he have in mind the transformative power of ecstatic pieces like A Love Supreme, Bach’s B-Minor Mass, and the soaring ragas of Narada, Tumburu, and Tansen? I think he did – and I think he had something else in mind as well.

What was that something else? He spelled it out when he said, “Every religion strikes a note, a note which answers the demand of humanity in a certain epoch. Yet the source of every note is the same music which manifests when the notes are arranged harmoniously together. All the different religions are the different notes, and when they are thus arranged together they make music.”

In just a few day’s time, in Richmond and online, we will investigate the symphony of the Message by means of an interfaith Convocation. The leadership of the Universal Worship, the Astana, and local clergy have worked together to make this special gathering possible. I anticipate a unique experience, a contemplative conversation rooted in the history of Richmond and with fruitful, visionary branches spreading out in many directions. I hope you will join us.

There is much to worry and sadden us in the world. The war in the Ukraine continues, as do armed conflicts and systemic injustices in many places. Meanwhile, the signs of our planet’s fever are everywhere to be seen. As I write, a third of the country of Pakistan is underwater, an incredible humanitarian disaster. There is no denying it: the song of our species is faltering in rhythm and tone, and has been for some time. The only possible solution is a musical one. It is time to harmonize – with ourselves, with each other, with the Earth, and most essentially, with the music of the One’s endless Word.

Yours ever,
Pir Zia

Creating a Beautiful Mind
Six-Week Daily Practice w/ Amida Cary & Jacob Miraj Ellenberg
September 26th – November 4th

We invite you to this unique six week series to explore the Sufi perspective on the nature of the mind. A beautiful mind makes a wonderful servant. A troubled, confused mind makes a terrible master. How, then, might we create a beautiful mind? Join us to explore aspects of mind, including sensation, memory, imagination, will and identity through breath work, concentration, sacred sound, and contemplation. This six-week series is led by Jacob Miraj and Amida Cary, new Vice Presidents (North America) of the Inner School of the Inayatiyya.
