Sufi Celebration at Omega Institute

Sufi Celebration at Omega Institute
June 2-4, 2017

Come celebrate the language of the soul and the divinity within all creation. Sing, dance, and immerse yourself in the spiritual rapture of Sufi rhythms and chants.

As a practice of direct experience, Sufism cultivates a compassionate heart and deepens awareness through prayer, meditation, music, dance, poetry, and spiritual inquiry. This weekend, enjoy inspiring musical performances by Omar Faruk Tekbilek, Baraka Moon, Youssoupha Sidibe, and HuDost. The Sufi Celebration also includes talks by Pir Zia Inayat Khan (spiritual leader of the Inayati Order and son of Pir Vilayat Inayat Khan), Pir Shabda Kahn (the lineage holder of the Sufi Ruhaniat International), and Tamam Kahn (poet, lecturer, and author).

Four decades ago, Omega’s cofounders were inspired by Sufi teacher Pir Vilayat Inayat Khan and the Sufi principle of accepting all paths that lead to divine unfoldment. Celebrate this inspiring tradition with us!

The Water of Life
Rochester, NY
October 14-15, 2017

Please come and join us for a unique opportunity in Rochester to enjoy two days of deep exploration of the Water of Life. What is this Water? We know that drinking physical water quenches the thirst of the body. Similarly, the thirst of the subtle body is met by absorbing the celestial energy that flows through space, while the soul seeks to imbibe the pure substance of spirit, the Water of Life.  How can one experience this? Pir Zia encourages us to partake of this Water in its several dimensions through practices of meditation, discourse, zikr (remembrance) and prayer, following the clues left in the teachings of his grandfather, the Sufi teacher Hazrat Inayat Khan, who founded the organization in 1910 that become what is now known as the Inayati Order.

Saturday & Sunday, 10-5 pm

Please join us for a special Q&A session with Pir Zia for young adults/students on Saturday from 5-5:45 pm.

Wisdom of the Prophets V – Sufism & Christianity

Wisdom of the Prophets: Sufism and Christianity

with Tessa Bielecki, Pastor LuTimothy May, & Pir Zia Inayat-Khan

Richmond, Virginia
November 2-5, 2017

O sweet breeze of Jesus,
I pray that all your days be blessed,
For the heart of Hafiz came alive,
owing to your breath.

— Hafiz

Christianity, according to Hazrat Inayat Khan, is “pure mysticism, a mysticism of love: to judge no one, to forgive everyone . . . to come to that knowledge which instead of making you clever makes you innocent.” Jesus Christ, he says, “was not only innocent in his thought and word and in his atmosphere, but those inspired by him also reached that stage of innocence which is the sign of the saintly spirit.”

In this fifth installment of the Wisdom of the Prophets series on “Sufism & Christianity,” Tessa Bielecki and Pastor LuTimothy May will join Pir Zia Inayat-Khan to explore the connections between Christian spirituality and the universalist Sufi path of Hazrat Inayat Khan.

During this three-day program, former Carmelite abbess and Christian hermit, Tessa Bielecki will introduce us to the foundations and rhythms of the Christian contemplative life, to celebratory ritual and the joys an “earthy mysticism,” and Pastor LuTimothy May, to the Christian tradition of finding hope and joy through spiritual music and the example of Jesus Christ, all in dialogue with Pir Zia, who will teach from his new book Mingled Waters: Sufism & the Mystical Unity of Religions.

Wisdom of the Prophets is a six-part series of courses, offered in-person or online, which offers students the opportunity to study and practice the inner teachings of the prophets as enshrined in the wisdom traditions that derive from their revelations.

Video and materials from the first four courses on Sufism & Hinduism (November 2015), Sufism & Buddhism (May 2016), Sufism & Zoroastrianism (November 2016), and Sufism & Judaism (April 2017) may be purchased by visiting the Multimedia page.

The final program in this six part series will be Sufism & Islam scheduled for May 3-6, 2018.

It’s Official. We are moving to Richmond.

va-museum-fine-arts

It’s official. We are moving to Richmond.

Last night, at the end of his livestreamed class on the Sufi Message, Pir Zia shared this news publicly for the first time. After a year of researching cities, scouting locations, planning and deliberating, we returned again and again to the idea of Richmond for the Inayati Order’s North American headquarters.

We looked at many cities—Boston, Philadelphia, Washington, D.C., Baltimore, Atlanta, Charlotte, Nashville, Louisville, Chicago and Austin. Along the way, we learned and decided that we’d rather be in a smaller, mid-sized city than a metropolis, that culture and diversity are important to us, as is cost-of-living. We also wanted to find a city with a sense of cultural emergence and possibility, on brink of becoming something greater. We believe Richmond is this city.

In the last two decades, Virginia Commonwealth University has invested generously in Richmond, leading to a cultural renaissance there. Millennials are flocking to the city for its low cost-of-living, quality-of-life, and good jobs. With so many creative people coming to work on their art and pursue their other enterprises, some are calling Richmond the “Brooklyn of Virginia.” On our last visit to the city, we found it easy to enter into the community and to begin to build relationships there. For all of these reasons, we find Richmond compelling and want to see what is possible for us there, as well as what we can contribute to its spiritual growth and development over time.

One down side is that it may be a bit difficult to get in and out of Richmond by plane. For direct flights, one would likely need to fly in and out of Washington, D.C., rather than Richmond International Airport. Nevertheless, we feel it is worth the extra effort, when necessary, as it will allow Pir Zia and his family, and the Inayati Order Astana, to live in a warm, hospitable place, with a reasonable cost-of-living. Housing and office space would be two-to-three times the price in Washington, D.C., or a comparable city.

Our plan is to move next summer, 2017, right after Season of the Rose summer school, currently scheduled for June 28–July 3 at the Abode. We hope you will join us for this event—to be part of what will hopefully be a great send-off for the Inayati Order Astana—and also that you will come visit us in Richmond, and perhaps even consider moving there!

Please note that the Abode of the Message in New Lebanon is still very much alive, and will continue to serve as a retreat center and community dedicated to the ideals and teachings of Hazrat Inayat Khan. And while the Inayati Order will no longer manage the Abode or have offices there, we will continue to work closely with it, and to hold Inayati Order programs there.

In Richmond, we anticipate the need for roughly 2,500 square feet of office space (perhaps in a historic row home or another such converted building), with a library and archive, ideally with meeting space for up to 60 people. We imagine one or two regular classes each week, with significant livestreaming to allow people to join us internationally, and occasional weekend programs in a local venue. Outside of these, we hope to make our way out to you, more often. We are currently working on a strategic plan that will identify ways to enable Pir Zia and our other teachers to do more regional events in North America and worldwide.

As we learn more about our plans and the city of Richmond (called “RVA” by the locals), we will share them with you, so that we can all envision the possibilities together. We hope you will support this shift, and potentially move with us to our new home.

With love,

Jennifer Alia Wittman
Executive Director
