What is sacred, mystical Sound?

Sound is perceptible activity of the all-pervading life. Different sounds differ in their outer expression, but within, it is one and the same activity which directs all sounds…The deeper we penetrate into the mystery of sound, the more we are able to trace the link that connects all sounds. This link is what the musician calls harmony, and it is in harmony that is hidden the secret of joy and peace. – Pir-o-Murshid Inayat Khan, The Mysticism of Sound and Music, Music, Chapter V, The Mystery of Sound.

The sound of the abstract is called anahad in the Veda, meaning unlimited sound. The Sufis name it sarmad, which suggests the idea of intoxication. The word intoxication is here used to signify upliftment, the freedom of the soul from its earthly bondage. Those who are able to hear the sawt-e-sarmad and meditate on it are relieved from all worries, anxieties, sorrows, fears and diseases, and the soul is freed from captivity in the senses and in the physical body. The soul of the listener becomes the all-pervading consciousness, and his spirit becomes the battery which keeps the whole universe in motion. – Pir-o-Murshid Inayat Khan, The Mysticism of Sound and Music, Mysticism of Sound, Sacred Sound.

You are warmly invited to attend the Inayati Order Online Leaders Training Module on Sacred Sound.  Music and sacred sound were essential in Pir-o-Murshid’s life as a sacred art and as a spiritual path guiding one to audition of sacred and inner sound and developing one’s capacity of hearing the Divine Voice “which constantly cometh from within”.  The course is will provide different ways to experience sound in a variety of forms and for many purposes. The format for the weekend is interactive and experiential within in a retreat-like atmosphere. The practices of Murshid, Pir Vilayat, and Pir Zia are included.

During the weekend, one meets and joins in with an online community of friends.  There will be time for dyads to share from the heart in a safe environment as well as for group subhat.

An online 82 pg. booklet, The Inayati Order Leadership Training Module in Sacred Sound, for reference, home study, and a resource for teaching and guiding murids is provided, as well as a Certificate of Completion.

Pir Zia encourages all candidates for leadership positions to attend the Leadership Training Modules. Completion of these Modules is a requirement for appointment as a Representative in the Esoteric School of the Inayati Order; and, existing Coordinators and Representatives are encouraged to undertake this course of study as continuing education.  This module is open to those in leadership roles, or training for leadership, in the other 5 activities of the Inayati Order, or in leadership roles in one of the member organizations of the Federation of the Sufi Message. Advanced murids are welcome to attend with their guide’s recommendation.
