Nav-Ras: Appreciating Hindustani Raga Music

A Nine-Part Class, March 16 – May 11, 2022

Nav-Ras is a nine-part interactive course that explores various aspects of Hindustani raga music including history, theory and aesthetics. Primary focus will be on defining what a raga is, how it is classified, and the multiple ways in which it is expanded upon through creativity and improvisation. The course will also include focused listening exercises along with discussions about tala (rhythm), classical genres, performance structures, and celebrated artists.

Our host is the Inayatiyya Music Activity, welcoming special guest faculty Srinivas Reddy. All are invited and no previous background is required.

We will meet Wednesdays from 11am-12pm ET/5-6 pm CET. While this program is in English, translation is available in Francais, Deutsch, and Turkish if noted on your registration by one week before the start of the program.

Registration Details

Advance registration is required, with a suggested donation of $10-15 per class ($90-$135). Also, since the course is cumulative, it is recommended that participants attend all nine classes in-person. Video will be posted to a special Dropbox folder and sent to you each week.
