A Message from Pir Zia

8 October 2024

Dear Companions on the Path,

A year ago we commenced, as an order-wide daily practice, the recitation of Amaan101x times a day, or more, as an act of focused empathy toward those suffering in Palestine/Israel, Ukraine/Russia, Sudan, Congo, and other zones of devastation in the world. A year on, prayers—together with outer-world actions that bring healing and redress—are needed as much as ever as Lebanon has become the most recent scene of decimation and more than a million people have been displaced. Friends in Lebanon, we pray for your safety.

Reciting Amaan expresses our ardent and urgent prayer for the complete stoppage of the systematic destruction of human lives in these regions, the free flow of vital aid in the form of food, water, and medicine, the expeditious rebuilding of hospitals, schools, and neighborhoods, and the appropriate addressing of the rights of individuals and communities. Please continue to keep the living thought of peace and justice at the forefront of your mind and heart and continue the daily recitation of Amaan until the harrowing bloodshed ends, and it cannot end soon enough.

Last month in central Europe at least 26 people died in catastrophic floods. In the U.S., a week and half ago the southeast of the country was struck by a severe hurricane, Hurricane Helene. So far, 227 people are known to have lost their lives and many are still missing and feared dead. Tens of thousands have lost their homes. As I write, a hurricane that appears to be still larger, Hurricane Milton, is barreling toward Florida. Friends in Florida, please take good care at this precarious time. We are thinking of you and sending prayers. May all those who live in Florida and neighboring states stay safe and well.

Yours ever,
Pir Zia
