Allyn Miner is a researcher, performer, and teacher of North Indian classical music. She has been on the faculty at the University of Pennsylvania since 1983.

Allyn lived in India and studied sitar performance with Thakur Raj Bhan Singh in Varanasi for more than ten years, then continued training under Ustad Ali Akbar Khan in California. She has a Ph.D. in Musicology from Banaras Hindu University and a Ph.D. in Sanskrit from the University of Pennsylvania.

Her books and articles focus on the history of North Indian music based on Hindi, Urdu, and Sanskrit sources. Her most recent publication is a translation from Urdu of Hazrat Inayat Khan’s 1912 work, the Minqar-i Musiqar. Hazrat wrote this comprehensive guide to the classical music of his time before he left for the west. Translations of all the Urdu and Persian poems in the work are by Pir Zia Inayat Khan.

In this live learning session, Allyn will demonstrate aspects of raga on the sitar and speak about North Indian music with special reference to Hazrat Inayat Khan’s book. www.web.sas.upenn.edu/aminer

Pir Zia Inayat-Khan continues his grandfather’s teachings as the spiritual leader of The Inayati Order, an interfaith, mystical fellowship with branches worldwide. His books include Saracen Chivalry: Counsels on Valor, Generosity and the Mystical Quest (2012) and Mingled Waters: Sufism & the Mystical Unity of Religions (2017). Pir Zia and his family live in Richmond, Virginia, where he teaches regularly at the Inayati Order’s North American headquarters, called the Astana.
