About Course

Four Brothers, the film, was created by Suhrawardi Gebel, long-time General Secretary of the Sufi Order, and grew out a meeting in Holland, at the Universel Murad Hassil in Katwijk, the site of a mystical event in the life of Hazrat Inayat Khan. At this meeting Suhrawardi met Dr. Karin Jirolet who was writing about the lives and contributions of Murshid’s two brothers and cousin to the legacy of the Sufi Message (available now as Sufi Mysticism into the West published by Peeters in Leuven, Belgium). He was impressed by the stories of these important figures in the Inayati lineage and felt that it was important for members of our Order to know more about them.

For the film, Suhrawardi interviewed leading figures from the Inayati lineage  who knew the brothers personally: Murshid Hidayat Inayat Khan on his relationship with Pir-o-Murshid Musharraf Khan; Murshid Karimbakhsh Witteveen on his study with his teacher Murshid Ali Khan; and Shaikh ul-Mashaik Mahmood Khan about his father Shaikh ul-Mashaik Maheboob Khan. The Sufi Movement also generously supplied recordings of the voices of Musharraf and Ali Khan as well as a large collection of images of the brothers.
